The answer turns out to be, that I didn't properly remove _all_ of the 2.7.2.1 stuff, that both the old spec and *.djl file were still there, and that the old djgpp.env file was not updated, as pointed out in the readme.djg in ~/gnu/GNU/GCC-2.81 directory : this readme file is essential for properly updating, but I had somehow overlooked it ;-{. everything now seems to work like a charm.
