It lets you autodetect and test the settings you choose. If autodetection does not work but using specific settings does, it's not the end of the world -- by providing configuration files to programs you can encourage them to use your correct settings. Using the ALLEGRO environment variable you can point all Allegro programs to one configuration file on your hard disk. The first thing you need to check though is that your BLASTER environment variable is correctly set.
