Hmmm... if JED needs 16 background colors the JED MUST ensure that's available and don't assume that's available all the time. In the PC world you can't assume that. The same is for the video mode, if your program really needs text mode it must first check if it wasn't started from a graphic mode. Anyways, Eli can modify this small thing in info but soon or later you'll found a program that makes the same stuff. In RHIDE you have an option to select 16 colors or blinking. RHIDE restores the original state.
