Is there another way to get the key that has been pressed without using
readkey() but still
in the same format as readkey() ??

I don't mean key[KEY_ESC], etc. because
printf( "last key pressed = %d", key&0xff) doesn't work.

And "int k; k=readkey()"
seems to stop stuff that has been installed using install_int().
