     Actually it's not that strange, because I think you are using the 
     Win95-compatible file system of NT and not NTFS, and in the former 
     case DOS programs can read long filenames as they can in a Win95 dos 
     box.

    This only happens if you are using NTFS (which I think is not the    
    case, above).
