Not broken, just old. The bug you mention was in the first upload of the Tar port. When this bug was found, I uploaded new tar112[sb].zip to SimTel.NET. It seems like you had an old binary, but by the time you downloaded the source distribution, the sources were already fixed. I still suggest to get the new binary from SimTel, since it was linked with patched libc. I am told that linking with stock v2.01 library will get you a buggy program. Specifically, the operations with compressed archives could fail without some of the patches in the library. The correct binary is 167936 bytes in size and is dated Nov 19, 1997.
