I'm working on a similar project now (which I'll put on my page soon, promised!) that has as primary goal to make directx programming easy & in reach of people who don't have an expensive/heavy compiler live VC5. It can be compiled completely with lcc win32 (which is for windows what DJGPP is for DOS, a pitty it doesn't do C++).
