At least try to create console apps without any gui. DJGPP is exelent tool for creating portable applications ruuning under plain DOS. DJGGP is complex inside and does many things wich win95 and NT does too (possible reason of many conflicts). I suppose, what any attemption to write a Win95 (dos box) is like a mineswepping ...
