Yikes. I think such cases need to be reported to FSF as bugs. 40MB would break a lot of other platforms as well (e.g., I think Dec's OSF/1 Unix has a default stack of 2MB). Btw, I usually use the `stackrun' program written by Charles Sandmann, to measure the stack usage in cases where the suspicion arises, and I usually find it invaluable in such cases.
