The WIP is the next step between 2.2 and (hopefully) 3.0. If you want to play midi files in your games it's worth getting the last wip which has an AWE driver. Music sounds much cooler with an AWE know. And then, there are some speed optimizations, i.e.the demo program works faster for me, no more jerky SVGA scrolling.
