Try gnu tar (1.12?). That's probably where Eli got `Makefile.in.in' from. It is IMPOSSIBLE to build gnu tar out of the box without W95 AND numeric tails turned on. Yes that's right, you ABSOLUTELY NEED those poxy ~1's otherwise `Makefile.in.in' will be deleted when the configure script tries to delete `Makefile.in'. This had me stumped for about 6 hours.
