ID kept the source "secret". Someone hacked something and it got out. But everyone's buying Quake, and nobody's snatching the source and DJGPP off the 'net and compiling their own copy. (Of course, it won't work without the level-data files! ID has complete copyright control of that. The quake .exe is free anyways, in the shareware version, which you can d/l from stomped.
