I posted about that a week or two ago, and Dim Zegebart replied and told me to check out his library, DZComm. The only disadvantage to it is that it's an add-on for Allegro 2.2, so you'll need to get it first and then compile it together with DZComm in order to use it (though Allegro provides some very helpful functions anyways, such as timers).
