I didn't mean building the entire program, but building the documentation which is bad enough. Especially when I have to read the documentation which tells me how to build the documentation so that I can read it... I feel that way as a programmer who's reasonably used to Unix tools, I can only guess how someone feels if it's their first C compiler. One reason why I support the idea of an install program as recently announced here, I'm unlikely to need it but I'm aware that there are many people who don't want to go through the hassle of working out where to put things, they just want to type A:INSTALL (or whatever) and come back when it's all finished (and that's not a criticism, just an observation; I do the same with many other areas of life).
