GCC did a bit of compiling and then hung. During the hang it periodically accessed the hard drive so it must have gotten stuck in a rather wide infinite loop. I discovered that it had hung and wasn't just slow compiling when I noticed that it had been doing the exact same thing for about 30 minutes running. When I took -fforce-addr off the command line it compiled fine. -- .*.
