You've made two excellent choices, I assure you ;) You could use Allegro's sound and music drivers... it's not just a graphics library :) Briefly, it will load in .wav and .mid files (maybe other formats - I can't remember) and play them back on demand, mixing up to 8 .wav files. It is rumoured that work is in progress on using the digital sound output to play midi files on cards which can't do proper music - the present MIDI driver only really supports FM or LAPCI. If you're new to DJGPP I don't know whether you know about this website - Brennan's DJGPP Games Resources (or something like that).
