The version of bash on SimTel.NET has a bug in handling so-called ``here 
documents''.  You need the latest bash port which solves that bug.  Search 
the DJGPP mail archives for the announcements about bash and you will see 
2 URLs where you can get that latest port (sorry, I don't remember them).

Right.  Since the autoconfigure didn't run correctly, it didn't create 
Makefiles that are useful.  Keep trying.
