I switched to DJGPP and then proceeded to learn makefiles and the like, and I am infinately more happy. Plus, I like the AT&T asm syntax as well as the huge support base. I have no idea how the actual compilers compare, but don't be afraid to take the plunge just because it doesn't have a snazzy ide (or, check out Rhide if you're into that sort of thing).
