Excited by my success in compiling Emacs, I downloaded a copy of gnuchess 4.0, patch level 77, dated May 15, 1996. Unfortunately, I found (not surprisingly) that following the FAQ instructions of configure make make install failed, because unlike Emacs there was no CONFIG.BAT or the like to support an MS-DOS installation. Also, the file MAKEFILE.DDJ indicates that it is for "DJGPP 2.6.0"; unless we're all _several_ revisions behind , I suspect that this means a version with GCC 2.6.0, as opposed to the current DJGPP 2. Thus I wonder if this makefile would work with v. 2 even if I could figure out how to do what that CONFIG MSDOS command does for Emacs. BTW, the documentation says that MAKEFILE.DDJ was updated for pl77; but the reference to GCC 2.6.0 makes me curious. Of course, the moral might be that compiling gnuchess requires a more experienced djgpp user . That shows me all the more what an achievement Emacs is to "compile out of the box" -- literally. Any suggestions appreciated, Margo Schulter
