Well, I also believed so, but after using a commercial program (which appears to be advertised with some entertaining programming quizes), I have found 'XXXXlint' to be very useful. It warns on tons of warnings, a lot more than by turning on all gcc's warning flags. If only we could get people understand that warnings are essential in the hunt for bugs...
