Assuming that you know AT&T syntax (different from Intel syntax, i.e. what MASM, TASM & co uses), the trouble is getting into protected mode. AS is a pure 32-bit assembler, so you cannot hack things in DOS (real mode) with it. Check out the DPMI systems provided with djgpp. Oh, and take a look at some preprocessor if you'd like to stay sane.
