The problem you describe is a known bug with GNU Binutils 2.5.2 package 
(that's where the linker comes from).  The latest FAQ 2.01 describes it 
in section 8.18 and discusses some work-arounds for it (however, it seems 
that you already discovered the ways around it yourself).
