It is the backend to GCC for your final executable. GCC is creating AS input. You can see it by setting the 'stop at assembler' option (Can't remember what it is, but look in the info pages'. I have made several standalone ASM programs with it. It uses the AT&T assemble model, not the Intel. Go the DJ Delori's site to find a tutorial page on how to do it.
