I think they switched from NeXT to an Alpha running OSF/1. They built an alpha->dos cross compiler with djgpp, and cross-built quake. Shortly thereafter, they were considering an alpha->next cross compiler as well, but that's a standard gnu trick. I believe they used the NeXTs for map/art design.
