Please don't mention EMACS. Why not!! I too am a die hard VI fan, and have been using Elvis for several years. I had toyed with microEmacs and didn't like it, so didn't really look at EMACs until recently. I found that there were a couple vi emulators, so I tried them out and choose viper mode. It has a very good vi (not everything, but most of the best stuff) mode, but now I can get all the features of EMACS and still have my vi interface. Like multiple windows, compile and edit in the editor and my favorite, the : is emulated on the EMACS command line, which allows for recall of previous commands, great for long subs commands where I forgot the / or misspelled a word. I still use elvis for quick power up and edit. But when I plan to spend a few hours developing, I pop up emacs and use it. Oh, and did I mention all the great on-line info pages with all the gcc info pages, libc function descriptions, oh and... well you get the idea. VI is a great editor, emacs makes it better.
