In fact, replacing a bunch of of Unix-like 'rm' and a 'cat' statement in the makefile by DOS equivalents I *did* compile f2c.exe and the lib-file smoothly. However, invoking the V2.x f2c.exe on trivial test *.f files I was getting strange error messages. It helps to know that you experience a similar problem, since I was attributing the malfunction of f2c to me messing up the makefiles. So I will join you in asking for some help from Mr Araki.
