Another thing to check (since you overclock your CPU) is to play with wait states settings in memory access (it should be an option in your BIOS setup) and with the CPU cache settings (likewise). I've seen cases where a machine would work fine on real-mode programs, but hang and/or produce garbage in protected mode when its BIOS settings were zealously over-optimized.
