I have a portable 'ar' I wrote. It refuses non-text files, as it does not build a symbol table, but that is one line of source which you could remove if needed. It supports three different versions of long filename handling, truncation to 14 characters, DEC Ultrix extended headers, SystemV R4 Extended Name Tables, and my own proprietary Distributed Extended Name Table format for both archive creation and extraction, automatically determining format for listing and extraction. Unfortunately, as an ar port, it does not support paths (though you could add them easily to the proprietary Distributed Extended Name Table format). Let me know if it will help. I have ported it to several UNIXes and DJGPP. -- Art S. Kagel, kagel AT ts1 DOT bloomberg DOT com "Fortune is fickle and soon asks back what he has given" -- Proverb
