I've scoured Garbo, Simtel, and Cica for every single scrap of serial
port code I can find.  I have plenty of examples, but they're all
written in assembler.

I'm looking for some freeware written in C or C++.  Performance is not
an issue - all I'm trying to do with this code is probe for a modem.
The interface would be something like:

fd = open(port, speed)
put(fd, string)
get(fd, string)
close(fd)

I'm using DJGPP.  If I've completely missed the boat, and this
functionality is simply part of <stdio.h> or some such, please let me
know.  There's the <async.h> library, but it only handles COM1 and
COM2.  I'd prefer a working implementation that handles COM1-4.
