Sometimes Use of printf() has two side effects which might shed a light on your problems: (1) it uses the transfer buffer (although the code you posted doesn't seem to use it, but maybe you use it in the full program?); and (2) it causes the CPU to switch to real mode from time to time. Does the same happen if you change printf() to sprintf()?
