   Dear all

   You have to excuse my ignorance. But: The alpha files are "snapshots" with
   a .taz extension. I must confess to never having met one of those before.
   How do I depack?

.taz files are tar archive files which have been compressed with gzip.  You 
will need to gunzip them and them use tar (or djtarx which is part of the
binutils distribution) to untar the archive.
