I tried a quick and dirty test in TC and gcc, and you are right, I was wrong. (I seldom admit that!) TC and gcc are completely divergent in their treatment of putenv() and system(), and a re-reading of Long Doan's post makes it clear that this has something to do with the interaction of go32 and the program in question. Mea culpa. I guess that a few years ago I grew accustomed to not trusting DOS's handling of modifications to the environment and so assumed it always didn't work right and left it at that, without really thinking about it.
