I used gnumake (3.71), gcc 2.6.3, go32 1.12m3, and the building worked fine. I also have the problem with getting make to build serial.o (i.e. I also had to build it manually.) I don't know what the problem is, but whatever I tried, make just didn't build serial.o. No errors were reported, except ld couldn't find serial.o.
