   Thanks for all the replies. I knew that dos text files were like this but,
I always thought of fwrite as strictly a binary write. I just checked the man
page on my local unix system and, it makes no mention of the 'b' option to 
fopen. 

   Thanks for the speedy replies, I would have been tearing out hair for days
