My 2.5MB figure was observed when compiling Makeinfo.c which is 7500 lines long (9000+ lines with #include'd headers). While it is true that the more RAM the better (lucky you!!), I would say that even with 16MB compiling GCC is no big deal: just give 1MB less to RAM disk; I don't think the compilation time would be much longer. (Of course, if you spend most of your spare time compiling GCC, your view of this issue will be a bit different ;-)
