It's my understanding, but I'm not totally positive, that DJGPP requires either DPMI or VCPI in order to use extended memory. emm386 privovides for DPMI (and for VCPI if you give it a RAM option), and allows DJGPP to use your extended memory. If you don't have this, it only uses conventional memory, and pages to disk a lot more. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...
