Yes, well, that was the whole question.  If there's any reasonable 
way to use djgpp *without* managing to set this variable or the
COMPILER_DIR one (or whatever it was), then I can't use it.  I need
to provide a make target which is usable by completely clueless
people, including those who may have updated to the 1.12 executables
properly but who may not have updated their autoexec settings.
