I upgraded from a 386/20 to a 486/66 because it was taking three *hours* to build gcc with itself. I got it down to a half hour by doing this: 386DX/20 -> 486DX2/66 8Mb -> 16Mb (extra cache & go32 space) IDE -> SCSI-II/EISA Each in itself dramatically improves that subsystem's performance, yielding a solid 6X overall performance gain.
