Wasn't really a problem of 1.10 DPMI - sorry for the false alarm, Charles.
The same time I switched to trying it from the Dos box under WIN I 
copied 1.10 ld.exe into my path (was using 1.09 ld.exe before).

error occurs also under VCPI (plain DOS) with 1.10 ld.exe (the one with
BFD).
I suspect it a problem with ld.exe in general.
