When I suggested that you might be running out of memory, I meant the ordinary 640K DOS memory, not EMS, XMS, extended, etc. One thing you might try is a program which swaps emacs to disk when you suspend it and start another process. One such program is SHROOM2D.ZIP available in the msdos.sysutl directory at Simtel20 and mirror sites. I have not used this program with gcc, but it did enable someone here to run ftp under ARJ.
