I have built a library (PDB) which is portable and which manages portable binary files. The main application has been for scientific data, but I believe it is well suited to a wide variety of other applications. You can obtain the source and documentation via anonymous FTP from phoenix.ocf.llnl.gov in pub. PDB is one part of a tool set for doing portable code development called PACT. On the phoenix you will see two compressed tar files pact*.tar.Z. One contains PostScript forms of the PACT manuals among which is pdb.ps. I would definitely encourage you to take a look at this and see if it meets your needs. Stewart Brown sabrown AT phoenix DOT ocf DOT llnl DOT gov
