Second question of this type in just a few days.  Are people just signing

Anyway, after reading the first request, I sent out some feelers, and am
in the process of trying to track down some of this very information.

I remember reading on a newsgroup (actually, it may have been browsing 
through the archives for this list.... I'll have to check that out....)
someone either posting or mentioning this very topic (I think wrt to 
djgpp specifically, but not sure).  Anyway, I posted a request to one of 
the unix groups and have gotten some response.

One person mailed me what appears to be a very good paper on the topic. Not
gas specific, but is unix assembler (386 specific too!).  I'm trying to get
more info out of the paper (it doesn't have a copyright, and I can't figure 
out who to get in touch with, and don't want to post it and then get in
trouble for it).  And it's also 2553 lines long, and I don't want to post
that to the list  :->

I've received a couple of other replies and trying to track down some more
pointers (I'm wondering if what I'm thinking of was one of the *.source.*
groups).  So I'm checking out some usenet archives.
