Most X clients don't bother. Anybody else working on this? >-- Well since you've gotten that far, you might try ftping epoch from cs.uiuc.edu. Epoch is Gnu Emacs modified to be a full fledged X client. If the demacs patches aren't too hairy, this would be a unique fixer-upper opportunity.
