has anything come of the great gnuish make search??

I am having serious problems with borland make v3.6. Make + gcc v1.06
lock the machine up 90% of the time. The problem being that I have no
idea why, and need a gnu-make manual to interpret the makefile so I
can do it all by hand. (I come from the integrated environment school
of programmers)

(I only have one essential package to compile - PCCTS from Purdue
university - this will not compile on our SUN system either, so I am
querying them as well)
