Thanks to some helpful replies and a change to look at the djgpp 1.06
distribution I have the compress tar and make programs to get me started.

Compress, djtart, and djtarx are included in the djgpp 1.06 distribution.
DOS versions of make can be found on simtel20.army.mil.
