I'm still a little concerned about the command line length issue - the original poster insists it works using the original files from Simtel. I see failures using the original files from Simtel at the exact same failure point - but I was testing under NT 4.0 (not Windows 98). I will try a small test on Win98 - and if I can't determine if there has been a change get more information. Does anyone know if either bash 2.04 on Simtel (6/30/01) or make (7/14/00) were built with non-2.03 library enhancements? Both contain 2.03 ident strings; but the bash 2.04 on simtel is around 3.5K bigger than the one I built with the refresh (could be binutils or whatever).
