But having to type long sequences of "-e foo -e bar" on the command line is a nuisance, especially given the limitations of the command-line length. It would be nice to have that in the fnchange file. Also, at least for skipping directories, you could use the same data structure used by djtar for mapping file names: there's already a provision there to skip files and directories. It would make the code less complicated.
