IMHO, there's nothing like the docs to help introduce a new hacker gracefully into a package. To describe a feature, you need to research the sources, to understand how things work, ask questions (which lets you get to know the other maintainers). Then you submit the docs patches, which add good value to the project without actually breaking anything important ;-)
