Perhaps it's better to fit extension in 3 letters. I don't see anything wrong with .gxref; .gxr on 8+3 filesystems is perfectly okay. Btw, I suggest to mention the different file name in the GCC docs. (I would have sent the diffs to the docs, but I don't have the sources handy.)
