So as an alternative, I propose that ln.c in filutils be modified so that if the call to make a soft link fails, then try to make a hard link. Then if the call to make a hard link fails, go ahead and print the error message. That way, 'ln -s' will work in those cases in which Unixy shell scripts (like configure) expect it to.
